New Orleans, LA - December 18, 2009 - Council Vice President Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson will join two non-profit groups this weekend in their annual “Field of Hope Community Pre-Christmas Recreational Celebration.”
The event features wheelchair basketball, flag football clinics for children and adults, wheelchair softball exhibition games, activities for the visually impaired, a Toys for Tots giveaway, and more. It is co-sponsored by Samaritan Multi-Services Centered on Living (SMCL) and the New Orleans Rollin’ Rinos Wheelchair Athletic Association, Inc.
All activities are open to citizens with disabilities. Events begin today until 4 p.m. and continue through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the University of New Orleans Human Performance Center.
SMCL and Rolling Rinos have partnered for this project since 2006. The groups are also the sponsors for the New Orleans ROLLIN’ HORNETS Wheelchair Basketball Team, and they host several wheelchair sports and recreational events each year at Dillard University, Delgado Community College, Tulane University, and the New Orleans Zephyrs Facility.
SMCL also works to develop affordable housing programs. This week, SMCL and the Gramatica Group began construction their first home, built for a senior citizen whose home was destroyed in Hurrican Katrina. SMCL is also developing a multi-services center that will be the first of its kind in the Gulf Coast. It will be used as a Paralympics Sports and National Wheelchair Sports Competition and Training Complex.
